About the Artisan

This mug is made by Kyoto ceramic artist Takunobu Sawada at his studio in Nantan, Kyoto. Born into a family of Kiyomizu-yaki potters, Sawada has over 20 years of experience working with clay.

Technique & Design

The mug features a milky-white kohiki (white slip) surface. The animal motif is carved directly into the slip using a scraping technique, rather than being painted with a brush.
