This handmade oval plate with leaf pattern is crafted by Takuya Kawajiri. It features the warm color and texture of clay. The plate works well as a decorative piece and for daily use in serving food.
Takuya Kawajiri is the second-generation Mashiko-yaki artist at Kawajiri Seitoujo in Mashiko, Tochigi. His father built a kiln there in 1974. Currently, Takuya is mainly responsible for production.
Since childhood, he has used pieces fired in his parents’ climbing kiln. He learned techniques from clay preparation to firing in a climbing kiln at Kita-gama in Okinawa. This led to his dedication to firing all his pieces in a climbing kiln. Since 2010, he has consistently fired the kiln six times a year.
He follows the philosophy of “creating products that can only be made here.” Takuya uses Mashiko’s clay, which is rich in sand, to create items like salt jars and spice mills.
